Taboo: being allergic a serious fairy tale

School trip coming up this weekend.

A list to make, people to inform, check of medication supply and taking care of some food items like snacks.

School counselor, school nurse, student advisor and Solange are involved and will take care that the trip will be safe.

While mentioning to the counselor that the story lines behind the allergies have much in common with a fairy tale, though a rather dramatic one. The deadly peanut kiss. So no kissing for the moment is the best solution to prevent any fatal ending of the fairy. True but not a very reliable thought. No peanuts during the trip is a better option. This brings us back again into the same discussions. Main topic: is it fair to ask from classmates not to bring any of their favorite food because of the fact that somebody happens to be deadly allergic?!

Research learns that young people, adolescents rather prefer not to share any of their 'weaknesses' with their peers. Researchers say : most young people never mention 'being allergic' to most of their  friends. Being allergic is still too often a taboo. To avoid that adolescents with allergies will not join in school trips and will be disconnected from social networks, we need to act. Honest information, the set up of a clear policy about allergies, discussion between peers are all tools in a serious approach to the patient and the involved environment.
